Coliseum was commissioned by the Emperor Vespasian between 70 and 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD by his son Domitian. It was built on swampy area near the lake of Nero huge palace. It was a colossus (a very tall statue) of Nero nearby, from which legend says the Colosseum's name is derived from, later destroyed in the great fire of Rome.
Colosseum was cleverly designed. It is said that most of today's stadiums, and structures alike have been inspired by the concepts introduced in the Colosseum of the building structure, even in modern times. It could be evacuated in five inearly minuta.Najinovativnijih part of the Colosseum was its cooling system. It was covered with canvas covered net-like structure of the rope, with a hole in the middle to make a breeze for the audience.
Another nifty feature of the Colosseum was vomitoria - a passageway that opens into the row of seats below or iza.Vomitoria of the Colosseum in Rome were designed so that the massive space may be filled in 15 minutes. (There were 80 entrances at ground level, 76 for ordinary spectators and 4 for the imperial family.) Genuine magnificent architectural development for its time. It is also a building of great beauty and design.
In the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was transformed into a fortress, and burned the marble used to make quicklime. In the Renaissance, but mostly in the Baroque age, the ruling Roman families (many of which the pope of the Catholic Church came from) is used as a source of marble for the construction of St. Peters Basilica, you see today.
Area of the Coliseum in Rome is still a very popular tourist destination where you can spend all day hanging around in the numerous cafes, restaurants, pizzerias and cafes are typical. In the city center, steps away from the forum area, safe and alive. You can enjoy it the most, and every Sunday morning, when the whole is closed to traffic and only bicicles and pedestrians are allowed.
