The Role of Fluency in Reading
Posted on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 by Education Center
in a lot of research that is done, there is an indication that reading fluency is a really important part of understanding. Although there are those who advocate the importance of reading fluency and those who do not, I believe that monitoring and teaching reading fluency is the best practice in education. There is much more evidence to support the idea that reading fluency is a sign of understanding, but it is suggested otherwise.
Some have reported that liquid can become a problem if students do not understand that the point of liquids in conjunction with the speed and, more importantly, accuracy. Students can get the mind frame that they are taking readings race, when they are assessed on fluency. What is the answer to that? Make sure students understand that it does not check how fast they can read, but it is very important for them to be correct. Students will understand the importance of being true, if the reason is explained to them.
Research has shown that reading fluency really help understanding. Word recognition is an important part of fluency. It showed that only "10 to 15% of children have difficulty understanding that not because of poor word reading" (as stated in Walczyk and Griffith-Ross, 2007). This means that 85 to 90 percent of the time, fluency improves comprehension. It is my belief that there is no rule that applies to every child in every situation. Instead I believe that in most cases children who are fluent readers with good comprehension skills, and research supports this up.
